WHY YOU SHOULD USE A FLY ROD FOR SUMMER CRAPPIE
Everyone knows Crappie can be very tough to catch in the heat of the summer months. If I’m not Crappie Trolling, you best believe I’m using my Fly Rod. Using a Fly Rod, offers a different approach and can be a successful tactic that will help you put those hard to find Crappie in the boat.
- 3 WEIGHT FLY ROD
- SINKING TIP LINE
- LEADER WITH 9 FT. TIPPET
- WET FLIES
- STRIKE INDICATOR (OPTIONAL)
My ideal Fly Rod is a 3 weight rod. Crappie are very Intelligent fish. Most times they inhale their food rather than aggressively striking it. A 3 weight will allow you too feel those light bites. Wet flies are my go too in the summer months since the fish are usually suspended 20 to 30 ft. deep. If dry flies are your thing I suggest you use them in early or late evening hours in shallow water. A Crappies diet will mainly consist of minnows in the summer months so I recommend Flies that reassemble minnow patterns. The Buck Tail Minnow and Clowser Minnow are my favorites. Silver and light color are recommended, but bright colors such as Chartreuse, Yellow, and Pink will also do the job. Now that we have the gear needed to bring some Crappie home for dinner, now its time to make them eat your FLY.
I recommend giving your fly time to sink to your target depth, and try slow and jerky retrieves to entice a strike. Pausing frequently, and finding a rhythm that you can repeat in your retrieve will render the best results.
